Does Green Tea Help You Lose Weight?

Drinking green tea on a regular basis can be a great way to help your weight loss program. It is easy to make - you just brew it like any other tea. Generally it is drunk without adding any milk or sweeteners. Although if you're used to adding sugar to your tea, you may find it beneficial to add a small amount of sweetener the first few times you drink it, gradually dropping the dose of sugar until you're just drinking regular green tea.



So, how can this different color tea help you to lose weight? And why wouldn't regular tea have the same effect? It boosts your metabolism. Which means that your body burns more calories. It also helps to oxidize the fat that's stored in your body.



Whilst there are quite a lot of plants that can do this, most of them can also increase your heart rate. Whereas drinking green tea doesn't have this side effect. So it is generally considered to be a safe option. Unless you buy a decaffeinated brand, you will still be taking caffeine as part of your drink. So the usual warnings about caffeine apply - don't drink too much, don't consume it too late at night, etc.



If you choose the decaf option, make sure you check what processes are used in the decaffeination process - some of them can reduce the beneficial side effects of the brew itself. You may be better off drinking a weaker brew less often than cutting out the caffeine altogether. Try a shorter brewing time before opting for a decaf version.



The other thing to watch out for is that you don't compensate for the beneficial effects of drinking green tea. It's quite natural to think something along the lines of "well, that's burning off extra calories so eating this snack won't hurt". But that defeats the object!



Use this as part of your weight loss plan. Use the beneficial effect on your metabolism. And of course remember that you're also automatically cutting out all the calories you would have been consuming in your regular coffee or tea.
