Protein to Lose Weight
from: When you make the trip to the grocery store, you will notice a wide variety of confusing labels using the word “healthy” in many aisles. The implication is that you are eating healthy foods that could promise possible weight loss if you buy the products. Check the labels for fat and carbohydrates on the boxes or packages of the “healthy” items. And adding to the uncertainty there are some foods that are supposedly useful for boosting metabolism. According to experts, there are certain foods from the three basic food groups that are favorable for speeding the metabolism so fat can be burned.
Protein in your body can actually increase the metabolism as it takes time to break down. The USFDA suggests around 50 grams of protein a day for a reasonably active adult. As the body spends time expending energy burning up the protein, the more calories it uses to break it down. Someone who exercises and builds muscles needs more than the average amount of protein in order to maintain or increase muscle mass and keep fat from being stored. Be careful though, various protein sources can contain a great deal of fat also so be aware of the fat content in the type of protein you consume. Chicken, egg whites, and some fish are safe bets for lean protein, which also can satisfy hunger pangs more easily than refined carbs such as candy bars or cookies.
Vegetarians can look for other alternatives such as low-fat cheese, yogurt, some nuts and lentils, for example.
By checking the food labels you can find out whether the protein contains high fat and slower metabolism.
Don’t avoid carbohydrates completely! Refined carbs (such as potatoes, white bread, white rice) can rise the insulin level in the body, which in turn promotes storage of fat. Look for foods that are high in fiber such as apples, celery, lettuce, and those fruits and vegetables that are filling. Most fruits and vegetables are unrefined carbohydrates that are essential to good health and weight loss or maintenance as they contain more fiber. By consuming more fiber, you can feel more satisfied and less inclined to snack during the day.
If you do crave a snack, an apple will be more filling than a candy bar.
Remember that too much of anything, even protein can encourage weight gain. Change your lifestyle gradually to a routine of exercise, lifestyle, and healthy diet form the major food groups. Remember, moderation is the key to permanent weight loss.
